LJUBLJANA FEMINIST BIKE TOUR

The Ljubljana Feminist Bike Tour offers a unique cycling experience that explores Ljubljana’s herstories — the often overlooked lives, struggles, and achievements of women throughout the city’s history.

Riding a bicycle, a historic symbol of women’s emancipation, participants discover fascinating yet little-known heroines of Slovenia’s feminist and women’s rights movements, alongside iconic personalities whose stories are embedded in the urban landscape.

What to expect?

• A 2.5-hour guided bike ride through often-untravelled routes along Ljubljana’s river banks and neighbourhoods

• Interpretive stories of Slovenian women’s history, social struggles, and feminist activism

• A reflective experience that connects physical movement with historical and cultural insights

This Tour is Ideal For:

• Feminist and queer locals and travellers interested in exploring Ljubljana by bicycle

• Individuals and small groups engaged with questions of gender equality and feminist politics

• Students and researchers of gender studies, feminist theory, and women’s histories (herstories)

• Locals and visitors looking for an active, critically oriented cultural experience beyond conventional sightseeing

• NGOs, public institutions, and EU-funded projects hosting visiting public servants, officials, or international delegations in Ljubljana

Themes and Highlights

On the Ljubljana Feminist Bike Tour we explore:

– The Ljubljanica river bank and surrounding neighbourhoods — tracing how women’s mobility, care work, and everyday labour have shaped urban life beyond the historic centre

– Trnovo, Prule, and Tabor — districts connected to women’s social activism, medicine, education, and community organising

– Jože Plečnik’s River Barrier and the Roman Emona House — sites that open discussions on gendered knowledge, healing practices, and the long histories of women in the city

– Feminist, queer, and women-led cultural production, with a focus on the Metelkova alternative culture zone and its role in contemporary activism and art

– Women artists, cyclists, athletes, and cultural workers — challenging historical ideas of passivity, fragility, and “appropriate” femininity

– Gendered urban spaces and feminist interventions that continue to shape Ljubljana’s social and cultural landscape

  • A dynamic, professional, encyclopaedic excursion, not only because of the use of the bike, but above all because of the diverse selection of women discussed. The guide combines exceptional knowledge with humour and avoids moralizing.
