We warmly invite you to join a special charity edition of the Ljubljana Feminist Tour. All donations collected during this feminist exploration of Ljubljana will go directly to the newly established Feminist Library.
Places are limited, so please make sure to fill out the registration form at the bottom of the page.
The Feminist Tour is part of a broader charity event organised by City of Women (Mesto žensk) together with partner organisations, under the slogan “Feminist books are weapons—share them with the community.” In the afternoon, a social gathering with food, music, a raffle, and board games will take place in front of Gallery Alkatraz, while the evening will conclude with a concert by two femi-queer bands.
Alongside the events at Metelkova, our charity feminist tour will also take place. We will begin on Wednesday, 19 June 2019, at 6:00 pm. As usual, we meet at Gornji trg 9 in the Old Town of Ljubljana. The tour will be conducted in Slovenian, will last approximately two hours, and will be led by Jasmina Jerant, MSc in Political Science, tour guide, and co-author of the tour. After the tour, we will head together to Metelkova, where we will hand over the collected donations to the City of Women festival team.
Places are limited! Participation is only possible with prior registration via the form below. The donation amount is not fixed, but we warmly encourage your generosity
WHAT IS THE FEMINIST TOUR?
The Ljubljana Feminist Tour was established in 2017 under the umbrella of the Urbana Vrana Institute. At the time of its creation, it was quite possibly the only regular feminist tour in the world, as it can be booked daily for both small and large groups. The tour has received praise from professional tourism circles as well as from academia and the feminist community. Some participants have even expressed a desire to create similar feminist tours in their own cities. Inspired by Ljubljana, a feminist tour has already been launched in Belgrade, and—according to their own words—a special feminist tour is also being planned by the granddaughter and great-granddaughter of Eleanor Roosevelt and Franklin Delano Roosevelt, who joined the Ljubljana Feminist Tour in August 2018.
So what is the feminist tour about? In short, it is a guided walk through Ljubljana through feminist lenses. The tour is rich with stories of women artists, architects, political leaders, social activists, teachers, nuns, members of the Women’s Antifascist Front, scholars from the humanities, social sciences, and natural sciences, women’s rights activists, prisoners, factory owners and workers, national awakeners, so-called “witches,” and many other women who shaped Ljubljana, Slovenia, and the wider region.
The tour takes participants through Ljubljana’s Old Town and wider city centre, casting a feminist spotlight on buildings, streets, squares, and monuments that suddenly appear in an entirely new light. With humour and critical insight, the tour examines socialism and capitalism, Catholic and secular education, and does not shy away from discussing figures such as Jože Plečnik or Ivana Kobilca. At the same time, it generously acknowledges historic struggles for women’s rights in the region and highlights encouraging contemporary achievements Slovenia has made in empowering women. Whether the stories make you laugh out loud or quietly bring you to tears, one thing is certain: the feminist tour will not leave you indifferent.
You can find numerous positive and inspiring impressions from previous feminist tours here.
The tour is wheelchair accessible.
